Another suggestion was to check if H 20 was stamped in the
exact same depth/font/style as the factory engine number? Or is
it shallower or a different font, suggesting aftermarket? I
compared the font of the H 20 to the engine serial number font,
and it appears different. However, thanks to some respondents
that sent photos it appears that the stamps are all in the identical
location and the same font as each other. Another indication of a
production mark.
When asked for a conclusion, the AI program suggested that it
was most likely a factory or near-factory casting / batch /
machining / inspection identi昀er stamped on the crankcase front
during production or assembly. In addition, the 1974376 period at
Norton was chaotic (multiple suppliers, third-party assembly and
replacement parts), so these informal stamps were probably
used to track castings/runs and weren9t documented for the
public.
I would say we don9t have an answer but maybe some ideas. I9m
glad to continue the serial number database if anyone want9s to
submit their stamp data for MkIII Nortons. Let me know if you
have a similar stamp and your serial number and I9ll add it to the
