n the morning of June 20th,
O
昀ve Nortons departed my
house for the rally, and on the
afternoon of the 21st, all 昀ve
rolled into the campground at
Buena Vista. I would like to say
all 昀ve arrived with no troubles,
but one (my Atlas) was running
on one cylinder.
You would think that a 250 mile
shakedown run to British in the
Blue Ridge the week before
would be enough to uncover any
problems, but it didn't work that
way.
Not only that, but it started
giving me electrical issues, and to
top it off, blew a head gasket
about 60 miles from home. The
bike did help me get an award - the Bent Valve - but it probably
wasn't the one I wanted. Much thanks to all who helped me get the
bike back on the road for the trip home.
I was asked 'How was your 昀rst rally as President?' There was a
show on cable called "The Presidents' Book of Secrets" I 昀gured that
I would be shown a similar document with slush funds, secret treaties
and the like. But, nah, pretty mundane stuff. We are still seriously
considering going digital, at the member9s choice. The recent rate
increase in postage rates makes this an attractive option.
The rally itself was - as usual for the DC chapter - great. We were
fortunate with the weather, had a presentation by Brian Slark on the
early days of Norton in California, and had a great group ride and
even had a movie night downtown with "I bought a Vampire
Motorcycle" starring a Norton Commando. It was so bad, it was
good. Next year perhaps The Motorcycle Diaries?
We have noticed that we seem to have a number of Norton riders
who attend our events who aren't members of the INOA. This is a
job for the chapter presidents - get out there and make sure that
members of your chapters are also INOA guys. We keep wondering
where all of our members went.
Just before I left for the rally, I read the book "The World Before Us"
by John Lennox Cook. It's long out of print - I found a copy on Ebay
