plate on and give some money to whoever wins this."
I did and the bike ran 昀氀awlessly. I set the timing by
"eyeball" and it ran so well I didn't check it for several years.
You’d think that, after about the tenth time I took that
Mikuni off, I would have realized the problem was elsewhere
and the only elsewhere was the ignition and furthermore, it
was the ignition when it got hot. And of course, while I was
fruitlessly 昀椀ddling with the carb, the bike cooled down so it
would run 昀椀ne for a few miles, until it got hot again.
So what lessons did I learn from this. First, don't wear
black leathers in July, especially in the south. Second, just
because you CAN work on something doesn't mean you
should. And, third, if I had only thought the problem through
instead of going for the tools 昀椀rst, I would have realized that
I could have taken the points cover off and the plate wouldn't
have gotten hot and the bike would have ran 昀椀ne. A couple of
years later, coming home from the rally in Lumby, British
Columbia, just outside White昀椀sh, Montana, my Fastback
started running rough. I pulled into a lay by and took the
points cover off and problem solved
But isn’t that how we approach most problems? If
your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
And if hitting it once doesn’t work, hit it again.
